Wow! We had quite the response from our last newsletter issue about visibility in the media. It seems a lot of our readers are very interested in becoming more media savvy. So, you asked and we answered. This issue, we’ve again focused on some quick tips to make sure your PR efforts get noticed.

I also want to take this opportunity to let you know about our Podcasting Survey that we’ve undertaken with our partners from Caprica Interactive Marketing. This comprehensive survey is a Canadian first aimed at discovering what’s happening with podcasting in Canada; audience sizes and characteristics, popular podcasts and topics, audience demographics, and more. We’d love for you to participate, so please visit www.canadianpodcastlistenerssurvey.ca to get going.

Last but not least, just a quick reminder about our Open House on June 8th. We’re so excited to be opening our doors so our colleagues and friends can come see our new home. For more information and to let us know if you’ll be attending, email us now.

We hope to see you on June 8th! Jen Evans

How Your PR Efforts Can Get Noticed by Media
As PR professionals we have some general rules of thumb we like to live by. While we don’t want to give away all our trade secrets, we wanted to share some of our favourite tips for media relations.

Have a Good Story
Whether writing a press release, a news article, or a case study, a good story must have certain elements. A compelling theme, a beginning, middle and end: this makes it a story worth telling. Journalists may decide on pursuing a story within seconds, so learn how to tell yours quickly and effectively.

Know Your Audience
You wouldn't call potential clients without knowing something about their business, so don't call the media blindly. Before you pitch any media outlet, study it!

It's All About Relationships
Whose call are you more likely to take? Someone you've never spoken to before or one who has taken the time to develop a relationship and truly understands your needs? It is no different with the media. Building relationships now means that journalists will take your call when you've got an important story to tell. As with any relationship, building trust is critical. Do what you say you will, within the timeframe you give. Remember: everything is on the record, no matter how close you are.

Create the Unexpected
Look for out-of-the ordinary partnerships for spurring media interest. Monitor the news for topical events and themes to hook your story to.

Good Writing Counts
Adopt a journalistic approach. Avoid using any jargon or buzz words. Say what you want, but say it simply and plainly.

Persistence wins the game
Success in media relations rarely happens overnight. The key is to stick to it and always keep looking for new and creative opportunities to raise your organization’s media profile.

Following these steps will help to put you one step ahead in dealing with the media. For more tips and tricks of the trade, be sure to contact us. Do you have a specific topic of interest or question you want answered? Send us an email to let us know what you’d like us to cover in our upcoming issues.

Sequentia News
For the love of Pod. Have you participated in the Sequentia Communications and Caprica Interactive Marketing Podcasting Survey? The survey will be closing very soon so click here and get started now. Participants are entitled to receive a highlighted summary of the results!

Our very own Jen Evans has just been elected Co-Chair of the White Ribbon Campaign. She’s the first female co-chair in the history of the organization. Way to go Jen! (And she caught a ball at a recent Jays game - here's the evidence!)

We’re going to remind you again. Have you RSVP’d for our Open House on June 8th? For more information and to let us know if you’re attending, please email us by June 1st.

stuff on my cat Okay, we admit we’re a little behind the times having just been introduced to the joys of Stuff On My Cat. But for any one else out there who has not yet taken a look at this guilty pleasure, check it out now. If not for the cat pictures, but for a look at the cottage industry (calendars, t-shirts etc) inspired by this simple blog. Talk about building community one cat at a time!

Quick Tips: Making Media Calls Easier
Quick Tips
Making Media Calls Easier

Here are some quick tips to make those media calls easier:

Be upfront. You can start with an introduction like: "We haven't spoken before."
Hone your pitch to a 15 second elevator speech.
Always ask if a reporter is on deadline. If so, find out a good time to call back, and do. Know your story inside and out.
Follow-up. If a journalist tells you to call back another time, make sure you do. Also, just because a journalist doesn't answer your e-mail immediately, doesn't mean she isn't interested. Remember, journalists can get as many as 200 emails a day.
