Lost and Found. The Ins and Outs of Search Engine Optimization
Appearing on that first page of Google or Yahoo search results is a holy grail for many websites and companies. The one thing we always have to remind our clients is that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an ongoing, and frankly, never ending process. If you think you can have your site optimized once, reach that top position and then sit back, think again. Search engine spiders or crawlers, the automated programs that browse the web indexing websites for search engines are always being updated and always working, seeking fresh content to categorize. So staying on top of optimization is a must to maintain and improve search engine rankings.

There are many different aspects to consider when optimizing your website. We've highlighted three to consider for now.

Keep It Fresh
It is widely believed that Google's search engine crawler (known as Googlebot) uses over 100 different factors in determining search engine ranking. One thing that is high in the Google algorithm, and we suspect in the algorithms for the other major search engines, is freshness of content. Google in particular is looking at variables such as the age of the content and the regularity with which content is being added. So if you don't upkeep and refresh your websites, chances are you will see your search engine ranking slide.

Keep it Clean
Avoid the temptation to venture into the grey areas of search engine optimization. Tactics such as overloading a page with keywords (known as keyword loading or keyword stuffing) will actually backfire as search engine spiders become increasingly more sophisticated. And your competitors will be more than happy to call any questionable SEO tactics to the attention of the search engines.

Watch the Graphics
Though the technology may one day reach a point where this is no longer a factor, for now it's safe to say that important content and keywords cannot be read by search engine spiders if they're in an image. This includes text embedded in Flash file or Java application as well as text in a jpg, gif, png and others. When in doubt, use HTML for important content so that it can be indexed.

There are many, many different components for effective search engine optimization. And what has worked in the past may now be less important (witness Meta Tags) as the programmers for the search engines keep upgrading the technology. If you're confused about where to begin or need some help with your current efforts, we're happy to support you. Contact us for a SEO audit, an SEO strategy, or actual implementation assistance.

Timewaster
For all the brouhaha regarding the questionable content (inevitable considering that anyone (!) can edit a listing), we admit that Wikipedia is still a go-to source for us when researching or just surfing. If you haven't given this online encyclopedia a try, go on and try a search: www.wikipedia.com.
We dare you…

Did You Know?
We all focus on getting found on search engines, but there may be times when you want outdated content or outdated websites to be removed from search engine results. The fine folks at Google actually have a removal process that can be followed by webmasters of the site in question to remove its content from the Google index.
